Tilburg Interpolis (1979)

Sponsored by the insurance company Interpolis, the 3rd Interpolis tournament was held in Tilburg, the Netherlands in November 1979. It was a Category XV event (Elo average 2605). Twelve GMs including world champion Karpov and former world champions Spassky and Smyslov competed in the all-play-all format. Rounds started at 1 pm, in a room isolated from the public. From 2 pm the public had access to a demonstration room, where top Dutch players discussed the games on six wall boards. The top five players received 6,000, 4,000, 3,000, 2,000 and 1,000 Dutch guilders. In addition there were bonuses of 1,000 guilders for each win. And even 400 for each draw and 250 for each loss. Chief arbiter: Constant Orbaan.
