Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Scarborough (1929)

A brief report by Tartakower in Wiener Schach-Zeitung 13 (1929) pp. 193-196 can be found online at http://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/a...

The tradition of an annual chess festival founded in 1925 was continued in 1929 (May 18 until May 25) in the Pavilion Hotel. The Premier Tournament had Tartakower and Thomas as internationally known participants. The others except surprise co-winner Saunders were chosen only at the very beginning of the tournament. Saunders beat Tartakower early in the rounds, and so an exciting race between them was induced. The organizer of the festival was Gerald Mutrie Reid.

Tournament book: Hastings 1928-9 & Scarborough 1929 by A. J. Gillam (Chess Player, 1995).

Some participants arrived late for the tournament, and so some pairings for later rounds were played in advance. This caused confusion as to dates and round numbers, but has been clarified by User: thomastonk in the Biographer Bistro.
