Hoogovens Group A (1996)

The 58th Annual Hoogovens Chess Tournament was a category XVII event held in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands from January 12th to January 29th 1996. 14 top grandmasters competed in a round robin format in the prestigous A event. The participants were (in order of Elo): Vassily Ivanchuk (2735), Vishwanathan Anand (2725), Boris Gelfand (2700), Veselin Topalov (2700), Alexey Shirov (2690), Alexey Dreev (2670), Ivan Sokolov (2665), Michael Adams (2660), Robert Huebner (2635), Peter Leko (2625), Sergei Tiviakov (2625), Jan Timman (2620), Jeroen Piket (2570), and Loek Van Wely (2570). As if three Linares titles weren't enough, Ivanchuk took clear first here, undefeated with 9/13. The final standings and crosstable are as follows:
