Aug-30-10  siamesedream: I know Carlsen is great player, but I must say his luck is almost equal to his talent.
Aug-30-10  play2win: How does Carlsen win? I'm sorry I'm in the dark here, only see draws vs. Anand.
Aug-30-10  zarg: Carlsen win by laziness and intuition.
Aug-30-10  play2win: Thanks zarg...perhaps a link to the game in which he displayed those two qualities? I don't see it on chessgames.
Aug-30-10  dahtah: <zarg>characteristics of a true genius.
Aug-30-10  frogbert: that game was censored. there were real possibilities of mating in the decisive encounter, and a black king and a white queen were reportedly involved.
Aug-30-10  zarg: [White "Carlsen, M."]
[Black "Anand, V."]

Aug-30-10  zarg: <characteristics of a true genius>

The best achieving geniuses are hard working.

Aug-30-10  crazybird: Vishy Anand: <..essentially I threw way the game in one move. 21…a5 loses a pawn on the spot>

Aug-30-10  wordfunph: as predicted, Magnus brings home the trophy!

cheers to Magnus!

Aug-31-10  frogbert: <The best achieving geniuses are hard working.>

some even maintain that hard work and determination is the defining characteristic of a genius.

Aug-31-10  zarg: I don't think Carlsen score well at hard work.
Aug-31-10  Kazzak: I see from the Tournament Table here that someone at cg likes to tease Carlsen-fans.
Aug-31-10  frogbert: i agree that carlsen would become even more of a genius if his work ethic would've matched that of say kasparov. :o)

Arctic Securities Chess Stars, Kr.sund, Final.

Finally an update from Arctic Securities Chess Stars in Kristiansund. I managed to win with white against Anand in the final. It was a tense game in which I attacked his pawn fortress from both sides and in the end his weak kingside became too vulnerable. As black in the Ruy Lopez Breyer variation in the second game, I think I defended fairly accurately. Anand did not get any advantage, and after simplifications on the queen side he offered a draw on move 28 as he was even slightly worse and without any significant counter-play. I´m not attaching too much significance to a two-game rapid match, even against the reigning World Champion. Anyhow the victory was important for other reasons. After my rusty performance in the group play I was happy to be able to step up a notch and played quite well in the final. And this is the first high level event that I´ve won in Norway. Jon Ludvig Hammer completed the Norwegian success by winning the bronze final against Judit Polgar. The event was well organized, and I would like to express my gratitude to the main sponsor of the event Arctic Securities and to the organizers headed by Aage Sivertsen. Thank you! Magnus Carlsen, Haslum, September 1, 2010

Lattas: I sent two mailes to Chessgames. They improved it both times; first from 13 to 15 games, so from 15 to 17(!) - game 2 and 4 was equal. But still not chronological or the right winner on top.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Lattas> They can't have the right winner on top. The only options available without a heap of work just for this one case are a) automatical ordering of players by total points (so Anand is ahead of Carlsen) or b) no ordering of players at all.

(In fact even those aren't really options - they exist side by side in any case - it's just a case of which version they link to.)

Lattas: I have a chess site (and more specified sites), but it's in Norwegian so far. Maybe google can translate it understandable. The site is http://home.online.no/~larasten/sja... or just write larasten sjakk and the link on the top.
Sep-02-10  messachess: <genius>--a startling insight, always unexpected, of brief content, coming somewhere in the course of hard labor (beginning, middle, end); sometimes coming in a dream, often inspiring of a lifetime of reflection.
Sep-02-10  Rolfo: Lattas, fine pages. As said, not in English yet :)
Sep-03-10  patzer3844: i count five points for magnus and 5 and a half for anand...Why the hell carlsen won?
Sep-03-10  Kazzak: Who knows, patzser 3844 - it could be because Anand and Carlsen qualified for the final, and then Carlsen beat Anand?

Strange, isn't it?

;-)

Sep-05-10  pulsar: Wow, I've been "away" from CG for a week and missed this. Good performance by Magnus!
