Reykjavik Open (1994)

The 16th Reykjavik Open was held in the Faxafen Chess Center in Reykjavik, Iceland, 5-13 February 1994. Following the round-robin event in 1992, the Swiss format was resumed with 9 rounds instead of 11. There was also a new and more 'modern' time control: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 60 more minutes for the next 20 moves, then 30 more minutes to the end of the game. In general, the event was open for players rated above 2200, and the field consisted of 62 players, including 26 GMs. Rounds 1-8 started at 5 pm, round 9 at 1 pm. First prize 8,000 USD, 2nd prize 4,000 USD, 3rd price 2,500 USD. Chief arbiter: Thorsteinn Thorsteinsson. Number of games played: 279 (assuming that Karason played in rounds 7 & 8).

Vadim Zvjaginsev, Hannes Stefansson and Evgeny Pigusov shared the victory with 7/9.
