Vienna (1928)

This tournament was played in Café Central in Vienna, Austria from 24 February to 16 March 1928. It was organized by the chess section of the Hakoah sports club, and held in honor of its founder and President Dr. Ignaz Herman Körner. The opening ceremony took place on Thursday 23 February. Games were played on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 5:30 to 9:30 pm, and 10:30 to 00:30 am. Adjourned games were played off on Wednesdays (mostly). Time control: 2 hours for the first 30 moves, followed by 1 extra hour every 15 moves. Prizes: 600, 500, 400, 300, 200, 100 and 50 Austrian Schilling for the top 7 players. Tournament director: Dr. Fritz Loehner-Beda. Richard Reti was ahead by 2 points after Round 11, and won with 10.5/13. Number of games played: 90 (Takács forfeited his 12th round game vs Grünfeld).

Tartakower held a simul against 22 players after the prize awarding ceremony, with the result +18 -4. Eight of the players decided to participate in the Trebitsch Memorial (1928) which started on 19 March.
