technical draw: If you look at the graph sideways at the May 11 point you'll see the profile of George Washington. I know cause I looked for things like that when I worked for the company.

This one gives me 122-0-0. You can play it over at http://chicagochess.blogspot.com/20...

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.c3 Nf6 4.Bd3 <The Kopec System, named for and popularized by IM Danny Kopec. It is characterized by 3.c3 and the odd-looking 4.Bd3!?, intending to drop the bishop back to c2, followed in due course by d4. I've faced it many times in blitz games, always finding it a bit annoying. I'd usually play ...e5 at some point and we'd end up in a Ruy Lopez-type position, which I'm not used to defending as Black.> Nc6 5.Bc2 Bg4! <5...e5 is also playable, leading to Ruy Lopez-like positions, but why give White what he wants? In Mega Database 2013, he scores 62.3 percent in 74 games against 5...e5. Consulting that database, I discovered that Black scores much better with 5...Bg4! Often he plays ...e6 and ...d5, setting up a French-type pawn structure where he has already developed his light-squared bishop outside the pawn chain. White only scores 49.1 percent in 377 games against 5...Bg4!, making it the only move that gives Black a plus score.> 6.d3 e6 7.Bg5 Be7 8.Nbd2 d5 9.exd5?! Nxd5 <Black is already better.> 10.Bxe7 Qxe7 11.h3 Bf5! <Refocusing the bishop on White's pawn on d3.> 12.Nc4 <Better is 12.O-O Nf4 13.d4 Bxc2 14.Qxc2 cxd4 15.cxd4 O-O 16.Qe4 Qf6, with a small advantage to Black.> 12...O-O-O!? <12... O-O followed by putting a rook on d8 and playing Nf4 is also good.> 13.O-O Nf4 14.Ne1? <Better is 14.d4 cxd4 15.Bxf5 dxc3 16.Qb3 exf5 17.bxc3 Rhe8 18. Rab1 Qc7 19.Rfd1 g6 20.g3 with a large advantage to Black.> 14...Qg5 <Large advantage to Black.> 15.Qf3? I was expecting <15.Kh2 Bxd3! 16.Bxd3 Rxd3!, winning a pawn, since 17.Nxd3?? falls into 17...Qxg2#.> 15...Nxh3+ <with decisive advantage> 16.Kh2 Nf4 17.Kg1?? <Overlooking Black's threat.> 17...Bg4 18.Qg3 <18.Qe3 Ne2+ 19.Kh2 Qh5+ also wins White's queen, for starters.> 18...Ne2+ 0-1

1.e4 c5 2.f4 d5 3.exd5 <3.Nc3 is the Toilet Variation. I am not making this up.> Nf6! <The Tal Gambit, which has pretty much put 2.f4 out of business.> 4.Bb5+ Bd7 5.Bxd7+ Qxd7 6.c4 e6 7.Qe2 Bd6 8.dxe6 fxe6 9.d3 Nc6 10.Nf3 O-O 11.O-O Rae8 12.Ne5?? Much better is 12.Nc3, which gives White an even score in Opening Explorer. Bxe5 13.fxe5 Nd4! <Much better than regaining the pawn with the more commonly played 13...Qd4+?> 14.Qd1 Ng4! <All following D Belotelov vs Psakhis, 1995>. 15.Bf4 <Dmitry Belotelov played 15.Qxg4. Everything loses. Mega Database 2013 has Psakhis' annotations to the game, so I didn't have to bother thinking.> Ne2+! 16.Qxe2 Qd4+ 17. Kh1 Rxf4 18. Rxf4 Qxf4 19. Nc3? <Falling into mate, but 19.g3 Qc1+ 20.Kg2 Ne3+ 21.Kh3 Nc2 22.Nc3 Nxa1 isn't much of an improvement.> Qxh2# 0-1

1.d4 <My opponent, whose handle is "windows vista" backwards, is always good for a quick point. See also http://gameknot.com/chess.pl?bd=196... (0-1, 14). Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5! <Best by test. Not 3...Bg7? 4.e4!, which Opening Explorer will tell you scores much better for White, especially if White follows up with 4...d6 5.h3! 0-0 6.Bg5! Opening Explorer> 4.e3 <Playable, but somewhat passive. More theoretically critical are the Exchange Variation, 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4, and the Russian System, 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Qb3 dxc4 6.Qxc4 0-0 7.e4. In the latter line, the unusual 7.Bf4!? is interesting.> Bg7 5.Nf3 O-O 6.Be2 c5 7.O-O cxd4 8.Nxd4 <More ambitious is 8. exd4 Nc6, when Black is playing the Rubinstein System against the Tarrasch Variation of the QGD, but with a tempo less. I believe that IM Timothy Taylor wrote a book advocating this line for White against the Grünfeld. Incidentally, on eBay I once bought Taylor's book <How to Defeat the Smith-Morra Gambit: 6...a6!> from his wife, Elizabeth Taylor. Seriously.> 8...dxc4 <8...Nc6 is also fine, but allows too much simplification for my taste, especially when one's facing a much lower-rated player.> 9.Bxc4 a6 10.a4 Qc7 11.Ba2 <According to Mega Database 2013, White's most common move is 11.Qe2 (played 15 times, with White scoring just 16.7%), and the best-scoring move is 11.Qb3 (played 13 times, with White scoring 38.5%).> Rd8 12. Qc2? <The vis-ŕ-vis of the two queens operates in Black's favor.> e5 13. Nde2? <White is already in trouble, but 13.Nf3 or the surprising 13.Ne4!? is a better try according to Houdini.> Bf5! <Large advantage to Black.>

click for larger view

14.Qb3 <The point is 14. e4 Nxe4!> 14...Nc6 15.Bb1? Be6! <The queen is embarrassed. I thought I was actually winning it, but not quite.> 16.Qc2?? <After 16.Qa3 Bf8 17.b4! - I overlooked that this would give the queen a flight square on b2 - 17...Nxb4 18.Qb2 Nd3 19.Bxd3 Rxd3, White is a pawn down and busted, but gets to keep his queen. Surprisingly to me, Houdini assesses the position as -2.54 even though Black is only a pawn up at the moment.> 16...Nb4! <Now the queen is officially trapped.> 17.Nb5!? <The best try. Maybe I'll grab the knight and hang my queen . . . .> Qxc2 <No such luck.> 18.Bxc2 Nxc2 19.Rb1 <Now 19...axb5 20.axb5 Ba2 (or Houdini's refinement 20...Bc4!) will leave Black a rook up, so White resigned.> 0-1
