NIKITA VITIUGOV
(born Feb-04-1987) Russia

[what is this?]
Born in St Petersburg, Vitiugov became a Grandmaster in 2006 and is one of Russia's rising young stars. He came second in the World Youth Championships in 2006 in Herceg Novi and was a member of the gold-medal-winning Russian team at the World Team Championship (2010) in Bursa, winning individual gold for second reserve, scoring 5.5/6 for a TPR of 2940. He also won individual gold playing reserve for the Russian team in the World Chess Team Championship (2011), scoring 4/6 (TPR 2729).

He was U18 European Vice-Champion (2005), U18 Russian Champion (2005), U20 Russian Vice-Champion (2006, 2007), came in at 11th in the Russian Championship Superfinal (2006), was =4th in the Russian Superfinals (2007), won the Russian Championship Higher League (2007) on tiebreak, was fourth in the Russian Superfinals (2008), placed third in Russian Championship Superfinal (2009) behind Alexander Grischuk and Peter Svidler, was knocked out of the first round of the World Chess Cup (2007) but made it to round 4 of the World Cup (2009), before losing to Sergey Karjakin. He also played board 3 for Russia 2 in the Chess Olympiad (2010) scoring 6/9 without losing a game, and scored 5.5/11 coming in 5th at the Russian Championship Superfinal (2010). He came second on count back to Le Quang Liem at the Aeroflot Open (2011), when he scored 6.5/9 (+5 -1 =3), and was =5th (10th on tiebreak) with 8/11, a half point from the lead, in the 12th European Individual Championship (2011), a result that qualified him for participation in the World Cup (2011) where he beat compatriot Alexei Bezgodov and Ukrainian GM Anton Korobov in rounds one and two before losing in a minor upset in the third round to Vladimir Potkin. A poor result (3/10) in the Reggio Emilia (2011) reduced his rating by 17 in the bimonthly rating period to 1 March 2012. Mediocre results in the 2011-12 Bundesliga and in the Russian Team Championships (2012) were only partially offset by his solid 7.5/11 in the 13th European Individual Championship (2012).

Vitiugov entered the top 100 in October 2008 and as at 1 May 2012, his rating was 2703, ranking him number 12 in Russia, number 35 in Europe and number 42 in the world.

Nov-29-09  returnoftheking: Any info on this GM? Age, style, etc?
Nov-29-09  DCP23: <returnoftheking: Any info on this GM? Age, style, etc?>

22 years, a very strong GM from St.Petersburg. He usually takes the trophy in St.Petersburg city championship when Svidler is not in town ;) You can find some more trivia on him in the posts above. And I have to admit I don't know him that well myself to comment on his style. We are sure to be hearing more about him though.

Nov-29-09  returnoftheking: Ok, thanks. Looking forward to his mini match with Karjakin!

technical draw: Not much kibitzing for a 2700+ player. I think I'll put some CB's on him against Karjakin.
Nov-29-09  Plato: <rotk>, <td>

I was impressed with him back in 2006 when he narrowly missed winning the World Junior Championship (losing the last game when he needed just a draw to secure first place).

Here were my comments on his games:

N Vitiugov vs Stellwagen, 2006

<What an incredible display of endgame technique by young Vitiugov!>

N Vitiugov vs Z Andriasian, 2006

<I think Vitiugov just choked. He only needed half a point to secure first place, and it seems like the excitement got to him when the draw was so close at hand. At the critical moment he cracked, unable to withstand the psychological pressure. Overall, though, I think he established himself as the most talented player in the competition, and if he is able to steady himself mentally, N. Vitiugov is another strong grandmaster in the making.>

Nov-29-09  Plato: Still, I think Karjakin is a notch above and will emerge victorious, but I'd be pleasantly surprised if Vitiugov proves me wrong!

technical draw: <Plato> I saw the Andriasian game and I think you're right about him choking. I call it the "olympic freeze" it's when you're need to make a simple action and you miss it. Let's see how he does with real, high level competition in a must win situation.

Jan-14-10  Troller: Congrats on a fine performance in the Team WC. Starting out with a meagre draw in the disastrous match against Greece, Vitiugov scored 5/5 in the rest of the tournament. This is after a very respectable 3rd place in the Russian Championship (TPR 2733). If he wasn't Russian he'd probably get some high-caliber invitations in 2010; being Russian you have to be 2720+ before getting such invitations it seems.
Feb-07-10  wolfmaster: I'd really like to see this guy get invited to a tournament like the Tal Memorial.
Feb-16-11  weisyschwarz: Finished well today at the Aeroflot Open, with a powerful win vs. Cheparinov.
Feb-16-11  Don Cossacks: Congratulations for co-winning Aeroflot 2011!
Apr-25-11  falso contacto: vitiugov has officially no fans.
Jun-16-11  plimko: What a game!

Oct-22-11  Karpova: His performance (and forfeits in the last two rounds) of the Governor's Cup (2011) explained:

<Sadly one player left before the end, and that was Vitiugov. He had started the tournament ill, and possibly hoping to shake it off over the course of the two week event, persisted, but instead his health deteriorated, and after the ninth round was forced to drop out.>

waustad: He's playing in Reggio Emilia, but his name is transliterated differently, with a 'j' instead of 'i'.
Dec-27-11  King Death: <waustad> That's something that you'll often see in Europe especially in German speaking countries. Who knows why in Italy though?
Dec-27-11  AlphaMale: So in Germany's he known as Njkjta Vjtjugov?
Dec-27-11  HolyKnight: With 10 games in this data base with the French Tarrasch Defense he is 9 draws and 1 win. Now many of his opponents were lower rated then him. But I still found that very interesting.
Jan-02-12  Whitehat1963: Perhaps he's not quite ready for primetime. Perhaps he never will be.
