Mar-25-13 World Championship Candidates (2013) (replies)

Marvol: Interestingly, two of the players I would have considered the most 'solid' (drawish) now have the highest and shared-second-highest number of decisive games: Gelfand at 4 and Radjabov at 5. Admittedly Radjabov has a high number of deciders for all the wrong reasons :|.

Feb-24-13 Zurich Chess Challenge (2013) (replies)

Marvol: Two more draws, both just over the 40-move limit. Seems no player is looking forward to playing the extra exhibition game. Meanwhile the chances of this entire tournament ending with only draws becomes a distinct possibility. A single won game anyway already seems to guarantee a ...

   Dec-12-12 Viswanathan Anand (replies)

Marvol: I find the parallels between Kramnik after becoming WCC and Anand interesting. Both seem to have made the conscious decision that, in order to become WCC, they needed to play extremely solid. Both cut down on their risk-taking, both succeeded in winning the WCC. But afterwards it ...

   Jan-06-12 Anish Giri (replies)

Marvol: Congrats to my compatriot :). Great job by a soon-to-be great player! Top-ten surely must be his goal for 2012! From his ratings compared to his age he seems similar in talent to Carlsen, I wonder how far he can take it. Somehow he seems to have been flying under the radar, with more

May-16-10 Wang Yue vs Eljanov, 2010 (replies)

Marvol: <Eljanov made a bishop look more powerful than the rook.> I think it was Wang Yue who did that :p.

   Mar-11-09 Veselin Topalov (replies)

Marvol: So according to the FIDE PB, Topalov is entitled to <another> shot at the WCC if he loses to Anand - being seeded directly into whatever candidates finals there will be. Other players will have to wade their way through series of tournaments or the knockout cup, but dear Toppy ...

Sep-13-08 Bilbao Grand Slam Chess Final (2008) (replies)

Marvol: <witty> On the one hand I agree with you, that to stop short draws the 'Sofia rules' are more than adequate, and yes, the 3/1/0 scoring can give some strange results. I do think that, more than simply stopping (short) draws, the scoring is meant to encourage players to play for

Sep-10-08 A Nickel vs The World, 2008 (replies)

Marvol: 5...Nf6 for me.

Sep-09-08 Carlsen vs Aronian, 2008 (replies)

Marvol: <JointheArmy: <Carlsen has done more at 17 than any other player in history. Not even Fischer or Kasparov can compare.> Rating inflation...> Either you're joking or you are desperate to be flamed for this incredibly stupid remark. Carlsen is no.1 in the ranking. He is ...

Sep-04-08 Carlsen vs Topalov, 2008 (replies)

Marvol: As an avid fan of the QGD-Tartakower I can only applaud topalov's achievement. Hurray!
