fredthebear: The tempting fork 28.Ne3?? would get shellacked:

Dec-31-23  goodevans: This game was in the final round of the Rouen Open (2023) and gave Firouja a 7/7 score for the tournament. His performance in the tournament gave him a ratings boost sufficient to snatch the ratings spot for the 2024 Candidates Tournament away from Wesley So.

His opponent in this last round was 71 years old and had a rating of 2275. It's fair to say that he put up as much fight as Firouja's opponent in the previous round, 2634 rated GM Gata Kamsky.

perfidious: This was not White's first venture into the turbulent waters of the Wing Gambit, but he lasted longer than in the notorious miniature K Shirazi vs J Peters, 1984.

Shirazi always favoured the theoretical byways, the two games between us featuring a Vienna Gambit when he was White, and an unusual line in the Symmetrical English as Black.

Dec-31-23  Granny O Doul: Kamsky and Shirazi often battled it out in the Thursday night G/30 events at the Manhattan Chess Club, 1990 or so. Firouzja was not then in the picture.
